So, let's talk about cinnamon...
I love putting cinnamon on my oats in the morning. It tastes great!
But... anyway.
You're probably don't care about my breakfast habits!
But, did you notice what just happened?
I was talking about my breakfast, but with one word, I started to change the topic.
I took control of the conversation.
I used "Anyway."
Many intermediate English learners tell me: "Audrey, I feel like a passenger. Other people choose the topic, they talk for too long, and I don’t know how to stop them."
Today, we are moving you into the driver's seat.
Here is how to use the word "Anyway" as your "Magic Switch" to lead any conversation.
1. The Work Pivot: Steering the Meeting
We have all been in a meeting where a colleague starts talking about something random—like the office coffee—for ten minutes. You are worried because you only have five minutes left to show your slides.
How to fix it: Take a small breath and say:
"Anyway, bringing it back to the deadline for Friday..." or "Anyway, before we run out of time, I wanted to show you the budget."
You aren't being rude. You are being a leader. You are protecting everyone's time.
The Social Exit: Getting to Bed Faster 🏠💤
Imagine it is 11:30 PM. You are at a dinner party. You are exhausted, and your "English brain" is finished. You want to be in your pajamas, but your host is still talking.
How to fix it: Don't wait for them to stop. Use the switch:
"Anyway, it’s been such a lovely night, but I’ve got an early start tomorrow, so I should probably head off."
"Anyway" signals that the topic is finished and it is okay to say goodbye. It gets you home to bed faster!
The Perfectionist Killer: Resetting After a Mistake 🎯
Sometimes you get lost in a presentation. Maybe you make a grammar mistake, or you see the other person looks confused.
How to fix it: Don't panic. Just say:
"Anyway, the main point is that our numbers are growing."
This helps the listener focus on the big picture. They forget the small mistake and listen to your most important idea.
The Decision Maker: Ending the Debate 🏖️
Are your friends arguing about where to go on holiday? Are they going in circles?
How to fix it: Step in and say:
"Anyway, I think we should book the beach house. We need the sun!"
It sends a clear message: "The debate is over. Let’s decide now."
The Peacemaker: Stopping the Argument 🕊️
If two people are having a boring disagreement that will never end, you can save the group.
How to fix it: Gently interrupt:
"Anyway, we could talk about this all day! Let’s see what the data says tomorrow."
You propose a solution and move the conversation to something more fun.
